Affiliation News

While I was on vacation, there were several stories that were released regarding the AAA affiliation status of four teams, the Nationals, Orioles, Yankees, and Mets.

Affiliation Shuffle

I’m still working on some confirmation regarding the rumors of the Nationals shifting their AAA affiliation from New Orleans to Norfolk.

Here is what I can find from some simple searches:

September Call-Ups

On Friday September 1, major league teams are permitted to expand their rosters from 25 players to any number up to 40. Only players on the 40-man roster are eligible to be recalled, and it’s typically the opportunity for teams to add extra depth to their bench/bullpen or give younger players their first chance in the major leagues. Teams will also activate injured players from the disabled list.

Minor Considerations

From around the internet, here are a few highlights:

*The New Orleans Times-Picayune has a note suggesting the Nationals have recalled OF Ryan Church, possibly to replace an injured Alex Escobar.

Irish Eyes Aren’t Smiling

A day after he surrendered seven earned runs in a loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Nationals optioned LHP Mike O’Connor to New Orleans and plan to recall RH RP Ryan Wagner from New Orleans in time for Monday evening’s game in San Francisco.

Pitching, pitching, pitching

The Nationals made a few roster moves today to shore up their beaten and injured rotation. First, the Nationals recalled RP Jay Bergmann from New Orleans and optioned LH SP Billy Traber back to the Zephyrs. After last night’s bullpen fire drill, the Nationals needed a rested arm in the bullpen for this afternoon’s game against the Reds. (more…)

Great Story Out of New Orleans

Posted by admin | New Orleans (Former AAA)’s Jonathan Mayo has a really good story about the post-Katrina rebuilding efforts in New Orleans.

Four More Reassigned

The Nationals reassigned SS Ian Desmond, LHP Joe Horgan, and RHPs Anastacio Martinez and Santiago Ramirez to their minor league camp.

Three More Roster Moves

The Washington Nationals today optioned OF Ty Godwin and 2B Bernie Castro to New Orleans and reassigned CA Brandon Harper to Minor League camp.

Eight Is Enough

Posted by admin | New Orleans (Former AAA)

The Nationals trimmed eight more players from their spring roster leaving 38 in the major league camp. They optioned LHP pitcher Billy Traber to AAA New Orleans. They reassigned RHPs Kyle Denney, Saul Rivera, & Steve Watkins; CA Mike DiFelice; and, OFs Kenny Kelly and George Lombard. They also released LHP Valerio de los Santos per his contract.
